Assessing the Woods On Daily Basis

There isn’t a sportsman that I know of who doesn’t assess woods on a daily basis. Good woods, bad woods, huntable and non-huntable woods that have a good feel and woods that have a bad feel.  We do it when we are walking or driving and we do it when we are listening to other friends talk about their walks or drives.

What we are assessing is not always exactly the same. I have a friend that is primarily assessing duck habitat. Many guys look for deer spots and many like to assess turkey and/or upland game while others factor in proximity to good restaurants and bars. There are even fishing woods; many times I’ve wandered into heavy stands of large hemlocks with a mountain laurel understory and knew I was getting into a great brook trout section of stream as well as a possible bear denning area.
