The week delay of the Cameron County Canoe & Kayak Classic provided nearly perfect water conditions for the annual race. Participation was down slightly due to the postponement, with 78 boats in the race. Typically the race draws over 100 entrants.

Emporium Hardwoods, one of Cameron County’s top employers, was heavily damaged by fire early Saturday morning. Twelve fire companies from Cameron and surrounding counties battled the blaze or provided coverage for stations on-scene. Damage estimates are from $7 to $10 million.
