Cherished Hunting Memories of Days Gone By

by Steve Nelson

While I have been hunting white tailed deer for thirty- eight years now, I had always hoped I would get that one “big one” someday like one of the ones on my grandfather’s wall. When I was a young boy, my grandfather would take me deer hunting in rifle season. I was a skinny kid that could barely hold up a gun.

Back then I did not have the equipment to stay warm like I do now. But, I would almost freeze to death if it meant a chance to hunt with my grandfather, Fred Streich. I used to spend hours on end researching and learning about white tailed deer to see if I could find out more about how they live, what they like to eat, just to see if I could find a better way to lure them in or stay hidden from them. I miss those days…
