Fire Whisperer

by William Crisp

Being that it is January, I’ve been spending more time than I had been in July staring into fires and so, I’ve thought about them. Where would we be without fire? Not here, somewhere deep in the south. I used to take fires for granted, that they were easy to build and maintain.

Then I spent time outdoors with urban types, I realized that there are a lot of things we fire tenders take for granted. I watched shivering guys standing around a burn barrel; taking turns smothering it only prolonging their discomfort and mixing it with frustration. That is the time I learned that ignorance is not always bliss.
