‘Give Teachers a Good Word or Two’
Dear Editor:
When I was in the classroom many years ago, I displayed two posters behind my desk. They weren’t there for my students. They were there for me.
One was a quote from John W. Gardner, L. B. Johnson’s Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare: “The society which scorns excellence in plumbing as a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy: neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.”
