‘A Few Interesting Facts About the Explosion’

Hi Phil,

Always enjoy your column.

The history of the explosive industry in Cameron Co. is interesting. I remember getting ready for work (I lived with my parents on Laurelwood Court in South Park) at Sylvania the morning of the last explosion, January 7, 1957 at 7:14 a.m. I stood in front of the mirror tying my tie, when the blast occurred. I remember the impact, windows rattled, and I felt myself sort of lurch to one side. It was over that quick, and it scared the heck out of me. It wasn’t that many years before that we were taught in school to “duck and cover.”
