Mentoring the Mentors
Pretty soon it will be mentored youth fishing day. Ironically, what we really need is a mentored adult day or a mentored mentor day. When I was growing up you didn’t need much mentoring to fish, it was actually a pursuit we did to GET AWAY from adults. Big time fishing on big lakes or from boats with adults was when we got some fishing mentoring. Hunting more so, but even for that, we found time to do it our way with just other kids.
Being mentored is an important time for impressionable youth. I learned a lot from my dad and uncles. For example, one lesson I learned when very young was that if we didn’t catch many fish on Friday I would get pretty hungry that night; that was a big motivator to learn.
