NTCAC Receives $125,000 Housing Grant

Five housing projects in the 25th Senatorial District will receive a total of $345,000 to improve availability and affordability of housing, according to Senator Joe Scarnati.

In Cameron County Northern Tier Community Action: Cameron County Community and Economic Development Program will receive $125,000.

This funding will be used to reduce blight while increasing safety and the availability of affordable housing by purchasing two modular homes to be placed on abandoned and/or razed properties in Emporium. These homes will be sold or leased as rental units to residents with income below fifty percent area median income levels.

Modular homes are ones which are built indoors, usually in a factory. The finished products are then transported from there to their final locations, where they are assembled by a builder. Modular homes are built indoors, so they can be completed in only a matter of weeks. This is because they don’t experience delays caused by the weather, which is often the cause of a delay for an on-site built home. This should mean that the Cameron County community won’t be waiting as long for their new homes and disruption can be kept to a minimum. Modular homes must conform to specific rules, guidelines and building codes that often surpass those of traditional on-site homes as well. Some modular homes are built using customised shipping containers. These containers create durable, customizable and attractive buildings. According to BMarko (https://bmarkostructures.com/modular-apartments/), shipping containers come in standard sizes of 20- to 40-feet long. However, they can be changed in different ways to make them more suitable as homes, for example by removing walls or combining units together.
