The Cabbage Cat

by William Crisp

“A skunk sat on a stump, the skunk thunk the stump stunk and the stump thunk the skunk stunk!” (Author is unknown; or afraid to fess up.)

Perhaps you’ve noticed the smell of skunk in the air as you travel down the highways this February. You can plan on hitting that odor in those spots and here and there in other places for about a month more. If you haven’t hit that distinctive odiferous cloud, I envy the filtration system in your vehicle.

The source of the smell is pretty obvious to even the most urban and/or stuffy nosed pedestrian. It is a “cabbage cat” or skunk known to those who like Latin as, “Mephitis mephitis nigra.”
