Wandering Aimlessly

First For the Zeke

by Phil Burkhouse

As I related last week, about 8 a.m. on the Youth Mentored Spring Gobbler Day, Jake’s ears detected a distant shotgun report.  He said to Gary and me, “I think that was in the general direction of Zeke.”

Isaac, aka Zeke, is our youngest grandson. and he and his parents were hunting several miles from our location.  I had heard gobblers in both of our spots and had high hopes that one or both of the two boys would connect that morning.  Jake had a chance at two jakes that he passed on, and Gary and I could not coax any longbeards close enough for a shot.  Zeke, however, had a very exciting and deadly encounter with two longbeards.
