Wandering Aimlessly

October 3, 2015 – A.M. Session

by Phil Burkhouse

Saturday, October 3rd, dawned a chilly 42 degrees with rain and wind—a perfect morning for staying in bed.  The boys and I had scouted hard and had located stands in twelve different locations throughout the county—we were ready, but I was not enthused about getting soaked on this Saturday morning opener.

Jake phoned in from his friend’s house at 9 p.m. Friday, and I explained the weather situation to him and told him we should probably wait and hunt Saturday evening.  His response was swift: “I want to hunt in the morning, rain or shine.”  I had promised myself after my “C” experience to make every day count, so I told him I’d pick him up at 5:30 in the morning.  The good news when I picked him up at 5:30 to head down county to a white oak stand was that it was only misting.  The bad news was the weather said to expect heavy rain by 7 a.m.
