Wandering Aimlessly

Bird Tracks: Winter 2016

by Phil Burkhouse

In mid-January the Subaru headed southwest for a wedding involving a member from the Zoschg limb of the family tree. Weddings are such a fantastic opportunity to catch up with family members from all over the country. We all live such busy lives these days it can be tough to keep in touch, but seeing all your loved ones for such a happy occasion is a total blessing. Also, it does a woods walker good to spend two days in a city to see how the urbanites live, and it also serves as a wakeup call for me to appreciate what we have here in the “uncivilized” world.

The wedding was terrific, the people were great and interesting, and the habitat was different. Mary’s great niece was married in Heinz Chapel, which is quite a spectacular edifice. After the wedding, I got chatting to one of our relatives who is currently trying to piece together a comprehensive family tree. He has always been interested in genealogical research and has made some brilliant progress so far. Moreover thanks to online newspaper obituary archives like this one: https://www.genealogybank.com/explore/obituaries/all/usa/georgia/atlanta/atlanta-journal-constitution he was even able to learn that we have ancestors living in Atlanta in Georgia. I cannot wait to hear about how he gets on over the next few weeks as I would love to see our family tree once it is complete.

Apart from the wedding, we also attended mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral, which was another wonder, and seeing the adjacent Pitt campus and all the bustling students was quite interesting. What have you been up to recently? Let us know in the comments. Also, if you have any genealogical research tips, do share them and I will pass them on to my relative.
