Wandering Aimlessly

Musky Man – Part Two

by Phil Burkhouse

Last week I gave you some insight into the world of the muskellunge, the huge fish that inhabits rivers and lakes in our vicinity.  I also mentioned Todd Deluccia, Watershed Specialist, Conservation District Manager, musky fly fishing guru, and 2014 Musky Fly Fishing World Champion.

Todd migrated to our area from Curwensville about 10 years ago, and I recently attended a seminar he presented on fly fishing for musky.  Most musky fishers I have seen use heavy spinning rods and lures big enough to thoroughly spook a twenty inch trout; fly fishing for musky is definitely a specialized art. Todd said he became “hooked” on musky fishing as a youngster fishing the Curwensville Dam.  Todd said unfortunately for him he caught eight muskies in seven nights of fishing and became “helplessly addicted.”  Musky fishing is a specialized sport, so before you grab your trout rod and head for the Allegheny River, you need to read further.
