Canoe Classic Turns Out To Be ‘Cool’ Event

Paddlers in the 44th annual Cameron County Canoe & Kayak Classic had to take the good with the bad,

The good for Saturday’s event was near perfect water conditions. The bad was bitter cold conditions. Temperatures were in the mid-30s under a pale April sun and brisk breezes.

“The event went well,” said race director Randy Bailey. “Water conditions were perfect. We only had one boat go over and those folks were quickly pulled out of the water by first responders on scene.”

Bailey reported  49 entries for the event, down from past years, but many quality paddlers.

Entries in most events like ours have been on the decline in recent years according to Bailey.
