An apartment building and a single private residence were destroyed by fire early this past Sunday morning in Emporium.

Five fire companies from three counties responded to the blaze with the first dispatch coming at 12:53 a.m.

The blaze is believed to have started in one of four apartments in a building at 541 E. Allegheny Ave. It quickly spread to an adjacent family residence.

At least one vehicle and possibly others were also destroyed in the blaze.

Adam Johnson, Emporium Fire Department Chief, said that in addition to his company, departments responded from St. Marys, Austin, Port Allegany and Ridgway.

Firefighters were on scene for nearly eight hours. In all, 40 to 50 first responders were on hand.
