From the Bleachers

The continuing drama of Cameron County High School sports coaching took another turn this past week when the Board of Education accepted the resignation of two varsity head coaches, Red Raider football mentor Scott Burnside and Lady Raider softball manager Ralph McKimm.

I have not spoken with Burnside since his resignation and conversed only briefly with McKimm, but as usual I have an opinion.

Burnside had put a lot of time and effort into these past two seasons, but I believe he could see no light at the end of the tunnel. The low enrollment at CCHS is not conducive to fielding a consistently competitive football squad and it will be a struggle to find enough kids to fill a team in a lot of seasons. It is very difficult to send kids out on the field with no realistic chance of victory, although I do believe the realignment of the football teams by the District 9 football committee will make things much more equitable for the smaller schools.
