PILEATED WOODPECKER

Nothing will wake up the silent calm of a sleepy forest than the flight cackle of the Pileated, our largest woodpecker.

They can tear up a dead tree, leaving piles of rotted wood around the stump in search of carpenter ants and other insects. At times you can catch one on the ground searching for insect larva.
