Conditions for the 42nd Annual Cameron County Canoe & Kayak Classic scheduled for this Saturday, April 2, are not favorable at this point, but organizers are hopeful that spring rains will fall this week and make the river navigable.

The optimum flow rate, in cubic feet per second (cfs), is between 900 and 1600, but the river can be run down to about 300.

Monday morning’s reading, however, came in at 259 cfs, despite heavy rains the night before.

While 259 cfs is likely too low to run the race on the Driftwood Branch, readings are rising slowly. An hour after that reading, the flow rate was up to 263 cfs. More rain is in the forecast for this week and that will likely raise levels, if only slightly.
