Save the Honey Bees, Don’t Spray Dandelions

Dave Smith is probably the only person in Cameron County, or the entire country for that matter, who gets excited when early spring brings on the dreaded explosion of dandelions.

“The dandelion is the life saver of bees,” said Smith, who maintains 105 colonies in hives in three counties.

“Man and his chemicals sprayed on dandelions and other wild flowers are the major cause of bee loss,” said Smith.

“I like to promote dandelions, Don’t kill them with sprays. They provide the first food for bees in the spring. The bees haven’t eaten all winter and when they come out in the first warm days of spring, they go right for the dandelions.”
