A Regular – The Barred Owl

One of the first bird songs I require all our grandkids to be able to identify and repeat at a very early age does not belong to a songbird but rather to one of our nocturnal birds of prey: the barred owl.

The typical eight-hoot cadence of a barred owl is close to the phrase, “Who cooks for you-who cooks for you all!”  This medium-sized songster of the Big Woods has many variations of his call ranging from four hoots to occasionally one single but spine tingling scream, but his normal call usually has eight hoots
