The Fork – Stores of the Past

by Phil Burkhouse

Our family simply refers to the area as “the Fork,” although the correct name is the First Fork of the Sinnemahoning.  The stream and its drainage area run almost due north from the southwest corner of Cameron County and extend well into Potter County.  The Fork is a blue ribbon trout stream, and the surrounding very steep hillsides hold a variety of critters you can pursue if you have good knees and don’t mind taking your life in your hands negotiating dangerous terrain.

The Fork also holds a special bond for our family because my wife’s family and her ancestors were raised on a small farm in the Lick Island area about four miles above Sinnemahoning.  The farm still remains in the family and is now referred to as the Zoschg Homestead.
