Silent Hunts

by William Crisp

Last Veteran’s Day I was able to fulfill a little tradition as I took a walk with my gun in the vicinity of where pheasants are supposed to be. Because my (not) bird dog Delta likes everything about hunting except the use of a gun, I left her home and took my 11-year-old son, Nick, who likes everything about hunting except not having a gun. I told him he could be my bird dog and he replied without hesitation, “Cool.”

As we struck out to a local gamelands I told my “bird dog” not to have high expectations. We would look for turkey and grouse as well as pheasant but I didn’t expect to see much pheasant action.
