Historical Society Awarded Grant

    Museums and historical societies in Pennsylvania have been awarded a total of $2 million for 130 grants, according to Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25) and Speaker of the House Sam Smith (R-66). Locally, the Cameron County Historical Society received a $2,500 award.

Haas To Lead Hikers On Trail Day

    June 7 is National Trail Day, and Nelson Haas will lead hikers on a 6-mile adventure on Brooks Run on that Saturday.  Participants can car pool from the Cameron County Chamber at 11 a.m. The hike will begin by noon and participants can park along Ridge Road.

Travel Delays on Rt. 46

    PennDOT is alerting drivers to potential delays along Route 46 in Cameron County, near the McKean County line. Crews started work on May 27 to excavate existing roadway on a northern section of Route 46 in Shippen Township. Through mid-June, the roadway will be reconstructed and new guiderail will be installed.

Penn Highlands Elk Welcomes New Obstetrician, Gynecologist

    Penn Highlands Elk, formerly Elk Regional Health Center, welcomes Dr. Alexander Batchev, obstetrician and gynecologist, to its medical staff, according to hospital president Rose Campbell. Batchev, formerly of Bradford, offers a full range of gynecological and obstetrics services for every stage of a woman’s life.  

Concealed Carry Class

    The North Central Whitetails Branch of Quality Deer Management is sponsoring  a  concealed firearm permit class.  The class will be taught by Concealed Carry USA.  The event will take place on May 17th  from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Emporium Firehall,  421 North Broad St.    

3rd Street Playground Closed For Renovations

    Please be aware that work has begun at the Third Street Playground.  Equipment will be torn out and fencing will be down, which makes it very dangerous for young children.

Three Local Organizations Honored

Three organizations in Cameron County will be honored at an upcoming PA Wilds Awards Banquet for their contributions in sustainable tourism development. Each year, the PA Wilds Planning Team gives out a small number of “Champions of the Pennsylvania Wilds” awards to recognize outstanding efforts by local partners.

Garden Club Plants Emporium

    Downtown Emporium will bloom because of the hard work of the Emporium Garden Club.  On Saturday, May 17, Emporium Garden Club members will meet at the mini-park and plant containers, window boxes and conduct a highway cleanup along Route 120.  

Memorial Day Party

    The annual Gibson Township Memorial Day party will be held on May 24th beginning at 4 p.m. at the township municipal building. Please bring a dish to pass and your lawn chair. Music by the Down County Boys.  

Summer Lunch Program

    Emporium First United Methodist Church summer lunch program will be held each Thursday beginning June 19 and ending August 14. Pre-packaged lunches will be delivered to neighborhood playgrounds. Lunch in the Wilds program is free and available to all children pre-k thru grade 6.

Water Co. Proposes 66.9% Rate Hike

    The Emporium Water Company has filed with the Pennsylvania Utilities Commission (PUC) for a rate increase “to meet increased operating expenses and costs of service,” according to a release sent by the company.

Community Nurses Honors Hospice Volunteers For Their Service

    Thirty volunteers were recognized at the 2014 Community Nurses Hospice Volunteer Recognition Dinner at The Red Fern for their years of service and contributions to the agency. Hospice volunteers provide services for hospice patients and their families in the home setting, in assisted living facilities, and in nursing homes.
